History

Starting around 1851, lawyers in the Territory of Utah would petition the Supreme Court for admission and, once admitted, were members of the bar of all the courts in the territory; essentially, there was a Bar of the Territory of Utah, but no bar association until 1884. Informal associations of Utah lawyers began no later than the early 1900s. In 1931 the Utah legislature passed a law designating the Utah State Bar to manage and regulate the legal profession in the state. In 1985 the Utah State Constitution was amended to clarify that regulation of the legal profession was under the judicial branch through the Utah Supreme Court, under which the Bar continued its regulatory and public interest services.

Pornographic Email Controversy

In February 2018, Utah State Bar emailed an announcement regarding its Spring Convention that contained an image of a bare-breasted woman to every attorney in Utah. Utah State Bar shortly after sent an email apologizing for the incident and promising an investigation. Following up Utah State Bar issued a statement "saying the email was prepared in-house and distributed to active members of Utah State Bar and the offending image did not appear in various previews of the email although one Utah State Bar member claimed to have opened the email the house gallery at the Utah State Capital." On March 11, the Bar released a statement to the media stating the image "was inadvertently added to the email as a result of a human error" and the "error is being addressed as a personnel issue."
